Gay and Lesbian Ski Week in Telluride Colorado, February 25 to March 5, 2006

In summer 2005, our friends John DeFalco and Bob Reuther told us of the wonderful time they had that prior winter month in Telluride. After Bob's untimely death in November, Dave and Daniel went ahead with plans with John for a ski vacation together back in Telluride.

Saturday early afternoon we arrived to glorious sunshine in Telluride: 8600 feet! We were short of breath! The last leg from Phoenix was in a prop jet took us through the valley passes, canyon walls rising shear on each side. Due to the winds the landing was scary; definitely not to be done during bad weather.

Our condo was located in the appropriately named Town Square, one of the three shopping centers that make up the Mountain Village core. The gondola passed right outside our living room window, and the mountain slopes unfolded up to the heavens.

The unit had all the amenities: two bedrooms, two baths, full kitchen, ski-in and ski-out, and most importantly for us geeks, wireless Internet!!!

When we arrived, the place was being cleaned, so we dumped our stuff in a corner then walked toward Heritage Square, at the heart of the mountain village. We ate lunch and listened to live entertainment at a burger place facing the skiers and gondola.

Since we didn't get much rest the night before, a nap was high on our minds. Back at the condo, we passed out and slept till 6. It was nice to wake up, and still have light outside; the day wasn't over yet. We crossed the Town Square to pick up our rental gear and stock up food and booze for the next few days.

There's a free gondola that runs from early morning to late at night, connecting the upper Mountain Village and the town of Telluride. At night, as we descended down the mountain, it was a great sight to see the lights in each town come into view
That first evening we enjoyed a great dinner at small restaurant, named 221 Oak, just steps away from the gondola base station in Telluride.
We enjoyed a drink before our table was ready. The meal was served at a calm pace, putting us in the vacation mode. The organic food was creatively prepared and sumptuous. Highly recommended!
